Angered by the pollution in the seas, a squid girl named Ika Musume comes from the sea and declares the invasion of Earth at a nearby yakisoba stand, but isn't taken seriously due to her small stature. When she goes to plead her case, she is mistaken for a waitress, which puts the responsibility of invading the world into perspective. When she breaks a hole in the store with her tentacles trying to hit a mosquito, the store manager, Eiko Aizawa, puts her to work in order to pay for the damages. Later, Ika meets Eiko's little brother, Takeru, who goes to great lengths to pretend to be a squid-person so he can be Ika's comrade. During a rainy day where there are few customers, Ika takes the opportunity to try and take over the stand, but is overpowered by the eldest sister, Chizuru. As punishment, Ika is forced to use her own ink to make Squid Ink Spaghetti, which becomes popular. || 1) The Aizawa sisters run the business at the sea "Lemon" where they serve beach goers. During their busiest hour, a strange girl appears before the younger sister Eiko. A hat with three points, wavy, water-colored hair, and a white one-piece suit. She calls herself Squid Girl and claims to be a messenger from the sea who`s come to subdue humanity. When Eiko tries to dismiss her ludicruous speech, she unleashes the wrath of Squid Girl. 2) Squid Girl is stuck working for the house at the sea "Lemon". Being worked so hard, she feels down when a shadow creeps up on her. When she tries to run from that shadow, her tentacles are grabbed. When she turns around, she sees a boy`s face, full of curiosity. 3) Due to the rain, the Lemon is deserted. Because of the chill, Squid Girl sneezes and covers the older sister Chizuru in a black liquid. When Chizuru licks this liquid... She realizes it`s tasty tasty squid ink. The gang take Ika, who had never heard of ghosts before, on a test of courage at the local cemetery, but she just ends up scaring everyone with her ability to emit light. Later, Ika becomes frightened when inflatable killer whales start showing up around the place (believing they are real), since killer whales are her natural predator. When Takeru asks Gorō to teach him how to swim, Ika tries to teach him to avoid the whales. Later, a new girl, Nagisa Saitō, joins the stand, though is a bit nervous around Ika, who becomes pleased that someone actually fears her. || 1: Squid Girl watches a TV special on ghosts but isn`t frightened at all. The gang decides to show her some real ghosts to finally get her scared, but things don`t go quite as planned... 2: Takeru and Squid Girl are swimming in the ocean when they come across her natural sworn enemy, the orca. However appearances can be deceiving... 3: Nagisa joins as a new part time worker at Lemon House at the Sea. When Ika finds a lost wallet, the owner rewards her with 10,000 yen, which she spends on frozen shrimp. When the TV in the beach house breaks down, Ika is invited to sleep over at the Aizawa household. While exploring the beach, Ika and Eiko find an imitation Squid Girl built by the owner of a rival beach house, Southern Winds, to attract customers. The owner challenges Eiko to various matches for possession of the original, though the imitation's efforts prove scary. || #1: Squid Girl receives 10,000 yen as thanks for finding a wallet lost in the sand. Having no idea about the value of money and with Nagisa accompanying her, she goes to the shopping district. Not knowing what to buy, she jets back and forth. In the end, she buys a ton of her beloved shrimp, but Sanae has been watching the two shop from the shadows... #2: After business hours at the Lemon, Squid Girl wants to go home with with the Aizawa family, but Eiko obstinately refuses to let her. With no choice, Squid Girl goes to pass the time in front of the TV at the Lemon, but it breaks. With time to kill, she amuses herself playing squid-vasion with some accessories... #3: Squid Girl and Eiko have come to the neighboring beach to investigate and encounter a fake Squid Girl, bikini clad with a Squid Girl like head. The owner of the South Wind House at the Sea has built a fake which discharges a black liquid from its mouth and can move its tentacles. A woman named Cindy Campbell who comes from a US extraterrestrial research laboratory believes Ika to be an alien and wants to take her back to her lab. Cindy attempts to brainwash Ika into thinking she's an alien, but her appetite snaps her out of it. Later, Ika has a look around Eiko's school, believing it to be a military base. She decides to hold the principal captive and take over the school before Eiko stops her. Later, Sanae has a dream in which Eiko finds a miniaturized Ika and keeps it as a pet. || Cindy, the bikini-clad beauty with streaming blond hair, is here from America to get information on alien sightings. Seeing Squid Girl, Cindy decides she is an alien and tries to take her back to the laboratory. Squid Girl resists and uses her tentacles and squid ink to try and prove she is a squid, but this is evidence of an alien to Cindy and ends up only further convincing her!? Eiko is heading to high school for a school day during summer break causing Squid Girl to be very interested in what kind of place "school" is. Worried about a disruption, Eiko makes it clear to Squid Girl that she is to be at the Lemon before departing, but she spots Squid Girl at school! Investigating the chemistry lab, the home-ec room, and the gym storehouse, Squid Girl is convinced "school" is a human army base! Eiko is taking a stroll on the beach when she hears something crying. A hero show is performed on the beach for the kids, though the performers run into a bit of trouble when Ika somehow manages to get everyone to cheer for the villain. When Ika then takes the costume for herself, Chizuru acts as a guest character to set her straight. Later, Eiko is shocked to find Ika is able to solve complex math problems. She reluctantly asks her to teach her how to study, only to find the technique is illegible to humans. After Gorō rescues her from drowning, Nagisa becomes concerned that he may have been brainwashed into thinking Ika isn't a threat, leading to some strange misunderstandings. || #1 Squid Girl is passing by a hero show and decides to observe the show with the excited children. After the Black Tights attack the children, in the usual plot twist, the hero known as the Noh Mask Rider appears. The strange looking hero causes Squid Girl to fall over laughing, but when the boss, the Squid Demon appears, her expression does an about-face! #2 Squid Girl gives the answer to a math problem Eiko was agonizing over from behind her. Eiko suspects she somehow cheated, but she correctly answers all the additional problems she is given. Unable to accept this, Eiko gives her the ultimate obstacle of a college entrance exam problem. Squid Girl writes down a number of formulas... #3 Nagisa is swallowed by a giant wave while surfing and is saved by Goro. Concerned about any evil plans Ika may have, Nagisa decides to sleep over at the Aizawas to keep watch on her. Nagisa pretends to not be scared of Ika, which upsets her. Eiko tries to convince Ika to just be friends with Nagisa, but Nagisa's fear rises up again. As Ika decides to play as being Queen, Cindy manages to trick her into agreeing to come to her secret laboratory, where she meets some her strange co-workers; Harris, Clark and Martin. Later, the girls run into the Southern Winds owner's daughter, and offer her a trial run working at the Lemon. As she attracts more sales, Eiko lets the owner have Ika for the Southern Winds, where she proves to be a worthwhile entertainer. || Nagisa is invited to the Aizawa house for dinner and her welcome party, but Squid Girl is there. As Nagisa trembles in fear, Squid Girl talks about a plan to take over the Aizawa house. In order to prevent the execution of this plan, Nagisa decides to stay overnight and monitor Squid Girl. After a peaceful dinner, when everyone has gone to sleep, Squid Girl makes her wiggly move! Squid Girl is taken by Cindy`s smooth talk and promises to go to the laboratory in exchange for Cindy becoming her loyal servant. With no choice, Squid Girl goes to the lab where three other researchers are waiting for her. They are very enthusiastic about alien research and frequently invent many extremely dangerous devices! Eiko saves the person inside the fake Squid Girl suit from a guy hitting on her. She begins working at the Lemon just to give it a shot, but the place ends up overflowing with guys there for the eye candy. The owner of the South Wind shows up at the Lemon during this and borrows Squid Girl as a replacement. Squid Girl doesn`t like it, but she is forcefully taken to the South Wind... Ika gets a fever, which she believes to be a special Squidgirl disease revolving around a craving for shrimp, so Eiko tries to help her stay off shrimp until she gets better. Later, Ika learns about the fins on her hat and everyone tries to figure out what they are used for. She also gets into a debate with one of Takeru's friends over sandcastles. Later, Ika becomes fascinated by umbrellas believing them to be ideal weapons. || Squid Girl falls ill and she collapses. Because she has been living the same life as a human, the people at the Lemon diagnose her with summer fatigue. They apply counter-measures to summer fatigue, but she shows no signs of getting better. Squid Girl tells Eiko the name of the disease which has her bedridden with a high fever. It is a mysterious disease that doesn`t exist in the human world. If you catch that disease, Shrimp become... Squid Girl realizes that the fin-shaped attachments on her head flap after Takeru points it out. The members of the Lemon put their heads together to figure out the hidden ability in the seemingly meaningless flapping. Is it for attacking, for communication underwater, or to fly through the air? While they are still thinking... Squid Girl shows an interest in a plastic umbrella she borrowed as she goes shopping with Eiko in the rain. Its form resembles having a barrier function to block the raindrops. Squid Girl has an unusual fondness for the umbrella and gets carried away as she waves it around and scatters water everywhere. While trying to avoid Chizuru's wrath after a failed attempt at doorbell ditching, Ika ends up making friends with a schoolgirl named Kiyomi Sakura. Ika invites Kiyomi over to the Aizawa household, but becomes paranoid that she'll get punished for not asking permission. Later, Ika tries on lipstick for the first time and becomes interested in all sorts of makeup. After that, Sanae and Cindy get into a fight over their respective desires for Ika. Later, the MIT trio bring over a special device which turns out to be a disintegrator ray which destroys the whole beach house. || Squid Girl pushes the doorbell at a stranger`s house as a prank. She tries to flee immediately but she runs into Chizuru and then the occupant of the house comes out. She feigns as if she`s there to visit a friend to try to deceive them, but she is in a critical situation as then Kiyomi shows up, having returned from club activities! Squid Girl has the lipstick she got from Eiko applied by Chizuru. She is impressed by her new look and decides to work at the Lemon while looking like that. Not discouraged by an attack from an over excited Sanae, Squid Girl is unable to control her curiosity about make-up and wants to try out various styles, except... The three stooges from Cindy`s lab come to the Lemon. They pull out various inventions that they brought from the lab, but they all look really shady. Among them, Squid Girl wants to try out the "bullets that grants you the dignity of an invader," but the light fired from the gun causes...!? Source: crunchyroll

On a rainy day, Ika exhibits a talent for art, though the depictions of her friends are somewhat scary. Later, Eiko tells Sanae that she should give up on her crush on Ika and try to become proper friends with her. However, holding herself back from Ika proves to be harder than Sanae thought. Later, when Kiyomi's baseball team falls short one member, Ika decides to help her out. Though she initially has trouble with the game, her tentacles soon come into good use. || Wishing for sunny weather so he can go out and sketch for his homework, Takeru makes a teru teru bozu. Being told that since he`s in this situation, he should draw what`s here, Squid Girl says she will help. After taking the pen for herself, everyone is shocked at the outcome of the image she drew! Sanae attempting to embrace Squid Girl and harshly getting smacked away has become a daily sight. Eiko worries about this unhealthy behavior in Sanae and urges her to abstain from Squid Girl. She inspires Sanae by telling her it will get Squid Girl to like her, but it`s self-torment beyond her imagination. The pitcher for Kiyomi`s baseball team falls ill just before a practice game. Squid Girl says she will play as a substitute on short notice, but not knowing the rules, she makes defensive errors immediately. Eiko finds an old doll from her childhood that freaks Ika out as it appears to move by itself overnight. As Eiko recalls the doll's features, she and Sanae wonder about the whereabouts of the other doll in the set. Having witnessed her abilities first, Cindy starts to wonder if Chizuru is actually an alien and elists the help of the MIT trio to gather some DNA. Later, Ika and the Aizawas go on a hiking trip to the mountains, where Ika's tentacles seem to attract the appetites of the wildlife. || Eiko takes out a doll that she treasured as a child. Squid Girl is creeped out by the rotten doll`s weird appearance, but Eiko says she will put it in her room for nostalgia. That night, Squid Girl can`t help but notice the doll`s stare from the shelf and turns the doll around. However... Cindy and the Idiot Three, who are always wandering about looking for aliens, make Chizuru their next target after Squid Girl. Her superhuman abilities has them suspecting her of being an alien. The Idiot Three immediately try to get near Chizuru to use various inventions to obtain samples for testing such as blood and hair... The members of the Lemon challenge Squid Girl to go mountain climbing with them, but she doesn`t understand the fun of climbing so the path is nothing but pain. Tired of walking, she tries to extend her tentacles to cheat, but they are bitten by mountain wildlife. Squid Girl tries to shake off the wildlife who has mistaken her tentacles for bait, but...
