Ichigo Kurosaki, a teenage boy who can see ghosts, helps a young girl ghost when some skateboarders knock over a vase offering for her. The next day Ichigo sees the young girl being chased by a big monster called a Hollow. Ichigo goes to help the girl but when the girl is just about to be eaten, a female Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, appears and saves them. That night Rukia visits Ichigo’s room and is surprised when she realizes she is visible to him. While they are conversing a Hollow appears and terorizes Ichigo’s family and household. After receiving a terrible injury from the Hollow, Rukia makes a final attempt to save her life, as well as that of the Kurosaki family and transfers her powers to Ichigo so he can save his family. || Meet Ichigo Kurosaki, age 15. He`s a high-school student who possesses the uncanny ability to see ghosts. But when he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper from the Soul Society who helps lost souls find peace, his not-so-normal life becomes even more abnormal. In order to save his family from the grips of a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans, Rukia lends some of her powers to Ichigo. After the previous night's attack, Ichigo decides to check up on his family and finds that they do not remember anything that happened. In school, Ichigo meets the Soul Reaper from the night before, Rukia Kuchiki; she is posing as an exchange student until her powers return. Rukia tells Ichigo that he must take her place as a Soul Reaper for now. Later when attacking a Hollow, Ichigo recognizes the Hollow as Orihime Inoue’s older brother. || It`s the morning after Ichigo`s transformation into a Soul Reaper, and no one in his family has any recollection of the events. Even the memory of him slaying a hollow is forgotten. He heads off to school, where he finds Rukia in the awkward guise of a transfer student. Now that Ichigo has taken most of her Soul Reaper powers, she orders him to take her place until she is at full strength. Orihime and her friend Tasuki are being attacked by a Hollow who was once Orihime's brother. Ichigo shows up and begins fighting with him. Orihime's brother is also struggling to gain control. Orihime is almost killed but her soul remains attached to her chain. Finally Orihime's brother gains control long enough to say one last goodbye to his sister before Ichigo sends his soul off to the Soul Society. || Not all souls pass on properly into the Soul Society. Sadly, they are abandoned and become Hollows. In the midst of this transformation, they lose their hearts and seek out those they loved most while they were alive. Therefore, it is only natural that Orihime`s brother Sora, who has become a Hollow, seeks her soul. Ichigo rushes to Orihime`s house and finds the Hollow has forced Orihime`s soul out of her body. Sensing spirit energy in the bird, Rukia feels they need to perform a Konso on the cockatiel and help its soul pass on. That evening, an injured Chad is brought to Kurosaki Clinic. Ichigo and Rukia sense the presence of a dangerous Hollow emanating from Chad's wound. Rukia and Chad are fighting the Hollow who was hunting the young boy's soul. Chad cannot see the Hollow but he can sense it and attacks it. Rukia can see the Hollow, but since she still has none of her Soul Reaper powers her attacks have no effect. A little while into the fight Ichigo appears and starts fighting the Hollow. When Ichigo defeats this Hollow it is sent to Hell and not the Soul Society because the soul slayer can only cleanse sins after death not ones during life. || Rukia and Chad battle the Hollow Shrieker which has haunted the "Cursed Cockatiel." They fight even though Rukia`s powers still have not completely returned, and Chad is unable to see Hollows. But this Shrieker has beaten many Soul Reapers and committed countless sins. Meanwhile, Ichigo is taking Natsuki home after she collapses from the shock of seeing the tragic memories of a boy spirit inside the parakeet. Rukia purchases a temporary soul at Urahara’s store for Ichigo to use when she is not around and he needs to fight a Hollow. What Rukia does not realize is that what she purchased isn’t a normal temporary soul; it is a modified soul with special powers created by the Soul Society. When this modified soul takes Ichigo’s place it decides to have a little fun in Ichigo’s body and refuses to give it back to Ichigo. || Rukia heads out to Urahara Store to purchase supplies which a Soul Reaper needs. The owner, Kisuke Urahara, is aloof and a bit of a mystery, but he stocks strange products which he buys from the Soul Society. The Soul Candy (gikongan) which Rukia had ordered previously has just come in. Its purpose is to provide a substitute soul for Ichigo`s body when he transforms into a Soul Reaper. While Ichigo is fighting with the modified soul Rukia gets a message on her spirit phone about a nearby Hollow. Ichigo and the mod soul then defeat the Hollow together. Shortly after this happens Urahara removes the mod soul from Ichigo’s body. Instead of getting the mod soul destroyed Ichigo places it in a stuffed animal and gives it the name Kon. || Ichigo and Rukia set out in search of Ichigo`s body which has taken over by a mod soul. Ichigo finds it at an elementary school, but the Other Ichigo has become too strong and gets away. In the midst of battle, Rukia receives a word through her Soul Cell Phone of a Hollow sighting, but the battery dies and she is unable to confirm its location. On the anniversary of his mother’s death Ichigo and his family visit her grave. While he is there Ichigo remembers the day his mother died. Rukia is found by a Shinigami who asks her why she hasn’t returned to the soul society. Ichigo accidentally tells him that he is her substitute Shinigami; which happens to be a felony. Meanwhile Ichigo’s sisters are being attacked by a Hollow. || The Kurosaki family drops everything to visit the grave of Ichigo`s mother. Ichigo intended to take a day off from Soul Reaper duties, but finds Rukia waiting for him at the cemetery. When she learns how Ichigo`s mother died, Rukia suggests that perhaps the Hollow who came after him was the one who killed his mother. Ichigo refuses to listen and runs off. Then a Soul Reaper named Saidoh appears to take Rukia away from the temporal world in which she has overstayed. Source: crunchyroll

Ichigo finds out that the Hollow attacking his sisters is the same Hollow that killed his mother 5 years earlier. This Hollow is called the Grandfisher and has evaded the Shinigami for over 50 years. Because of the fact that this Hollow killed his mother to defend his pride Ichigo must fight it alone. || The Grand Fisher appears before Ichigo and his friends. He is a Hollow who uses a lure to seek out humans with strong spiritual energy. Ichigo is shocked when he sees the lure. It has the shape of the young girl he saw six years ago when his mother died. Filled with rage and disbelief, he attacks the Grand Fisher. But losing his calm makes Ichigo easy prey... and even Rukia who comes to Ichigo`s rescue is thrown aside. Source: crunchyroll

Don Kan’onji, the star of a show that specializes in spirit exorcism, comes to Ichigo’s town to do a live show. Kan’onji thinks he is exorcising an earth bound spirit but instead he turns it in to a Hollow. Now he must rely on Ichigo help to defeat it. || The charismatic medium, Don Kanonji, exterminates evil spirits on his hit television program, "Journey to a Haunted Place" and the series comes on location to the town of Karakura. Ichigo hates ghost programs and refuses to go with Orihime and Keigo to see the live show, but is dragged along anyway by his father and Yuzu. Ichigo is disgusted by the crowd which has gathered, but suddenly he sees a Demi-Hollow. To make things worse, Kanonji`s actions end up aggravating the Demi-Hollow... Source: crunchyroll

Rukia gets a message on her pager about a nearby Hollow. When Rukia and Ichigo arrive at the place the where Hollow was supposed to be they find out that it had already been defeated. This happens once again but this time shortly afterwards a man who calls himself a Qunicy confronts them. Rukia goes to the Urahara shop to learn more about what a Qunicy is. She learns that a Qunicy is a person that kills Hollows. But the way a Qunicy defeats a Hollow is different; they totally destroy a Hollow while a Shinigami only "cleanses" its soul. || Rukia has been totally accepted by Ichigo`s circle of friends, and Ichigo continues his work as a Soul Reaper. On this day, the two set out to exterminate a Hollow, but when they get to the location, they find nothing. The soul they find there confirms that a Hollow had been there. Uuryu and Ichigo have a contest to see who can destroy the most Hollows after Uuryu releases his Hollow bait. Meanwhile Chad is being pursued by a Hollow because he has spiritual powers. He runs into Ichigo’s sister Karen and must protect her and her friends from the Hollow with his powerful right arm. || The last Quincy, who hates Soul Reapers — Uryu Ishida, challenges Ichigo to a duel. He will scatter bait to lure Hollows to the town and the one "who kills the most Hollows" will win. Ichigo adamantly refuses, but is forced into the duel when Uryu scatters the bait and the Hollows converge on Karakura Town. Orihime and her friends are being attacked by a hollow who can shoot seeds that control people from its head. Orihime realizes that she has a spiritual power where she can control six small fairy like beings. She uses this power to defeat the hollow. Later Orihime and Chad are taken to Urahara Kisuke's store where they are told about Shinigami and Hollows. Meanwhile Uuryu is starting to believe that something larger is going on because his Hollow bait shouldn't have attracted so many Hollows. || The demonic hands of a Hollow reach out for Orihime and Tatsuki. The Hollow releases seeds which turn humans into zombies which attack other humans. Orihime and Tatsuki are surrounded by the student zombies. In their attempt to escape, Tatsuki is hit by a seed and is unable to move. She struggles against the Hollow and is hurled into the air. Rukia tells Ichigo why the Shinigami defeated the Quincy 200 years earlier. Ichigo confronts Uuryu with this knowledge while they are fighting the Hollows. This makes Uuryu remember how his Sensei died. While reminiscing Ichigo and Uuryu notice they are surrounded by Hollows and must work together to defeat them. While they are fighting Urahara and his friends show up and defeat the Hollows. Now Ichigo and Uuryu can concentrate on the Menos, a gigantic Hollow formed from hundreds of Hollows, which just appeared in the sky. || Ichigo and Ishida have their hands full with hordes of Hollows. During the battle, the story of the annihilation of the Quincy is told, and the reason why Ishida hates Soul Reapers becomes clear. Although at first, Ishida insists on fighting alone, the sheer number of Hollows has him worried. Ichigo then explains his reasons for fighting and suggests they join forces. Kon's on a mission. And this mission involves getting love from the ladies. Too bad for this stuffed lion, as everything he hopes for gets flipped upside down and around. Also, Urahara gets a strange visit from an even stranger black cat. One that knows him well enough to see through his faux attitude. || Yuzu gives Kon a bath and on top of that, dresses him up in a dress with a flower ornament. Kon is irate, but Ichigo pays him no attention. After overcoming many difficulties together, Kon has developed a close affinity to the Kurosaki family. But believing that this sentiment was not reciprocated by the others, Kon leaves the Kurosaki house in search of a place where he would really belong. The feelings Rukia have been experiencing of late drive her to run away. But she doesn't get far, as two familiar Shinigami come forth to claim her. Lucky for her the Quincy, Ishida Uryuu, was about the night-covered streets. And lucky for her Ichigo arrives. But Rukia's luck can only take her so far. || Two representatives from Soul Society appear before Rukia. They are 6th Company Asst. Captain Renji Abarai and Captain Byakuya Kuchiki, Rukia`s older brother. Swinging his Zanpakuto, Renji demands to know the whereabouts of the human who took Rukia`s Soul Reaper powers. Ichigo continues his duel with Renji. He has underestimated this Shinigami one too many times. When overwhelmed he is driven into a corner. And as the killing blow is about to be met, the calm Byakuya steps in. Only problem is... he's too swift for you to notice before you're impaled. || Renji unleashes the full power of his Zanpakuto towards Ichigo who is unable to beat back this fierce attack. But Rukia knows that Ichigo will not give up no matter how overpowered he is. Fearing that Ichigo will be killed, Rukia throws herself before Renji to stop the fighting and tells Ichigo to escape. Ichigo needs training and luckily with school out, Urahara Kisuke will put him through some hardships. || Rukia is taken back to Soul Society as Ichigo is helpless against Byakuya`s fierce attack. His life saved in the knick of time by Urahara, and Ichigo is determined to go to Soul Society to save Rukia. The next day at school, Ichigo is shocked to find that Rukia has been totally erased from his classmates` memories. However, a few remember her existence. Ichigo trains with Urahara. He is underground trapped in the hole with 72 hours left until his life chain will come to its end. Held by a binding spell, he waits while Jinta and Ururu tease him. When his chain is no more, he goes though the process of becoming a Hollow. In his mind Ichigo finds that he has to find the shinigami box or he will become a Hollow. After he finds the box he comes out of the hole a semi-hollow, semi-shinigami. He breaks the mask and Urahara moves on to the third lesson: defeat Urahara. || The final lesson necessary to restore Ichigo`s powers as a Soul Reaper is the Shattered Shaft. Ichigo`s chain of fate is cut and unless he gets back his Soul Reaper powers in 72 hours, he will turn into a Hollow. Ichigo is deep in a hole in the underground training site below Urahara Shop, desperate to find a way out. Seven days after his training is complete Ichigo, Orihime, Chad and Uuryu prepare to leave for the Soul Society with Yoruichi-san as their guide. || At Soul Society, Captain Gin Ichimaru of the 3rd Company appears before Byakuya after receiving word of Rukia`s execution sentence. Meanwhile, Ichigo, whose Soul Reaper powers have returned, begins special training with his Zanpakuto. Each Zanpakuto has a name, and its secret powers are released when its wielder calls out its name. Ichigo is urged to discover the name of his Zanpakuto. When Byakuya comes to Rukia's cell, he finds out that she is being rescued. In an attempt to kill them, Ichigo comes flying in and saving the day. Will he succeed? || Ichigo, Ishida, Orihime, Chad and Yoruichi get past the Seikaimon and they are nearly swallowed up by the Kototsu in the passage way that connects the real world to Soul Society. But they make it safely to Soul Society, to the Rukon District, where konpaku live when they first come to Soul Society. Ichigo sets out for Seireitei which houses the Soul Reapers.
