1. The Self-Defense Force Goes to Another World

A mysterious gate suddenly appears in Ginza, Tokyo where fantasy creatures led by men in Roman armor come out from it and attack the people. Yōji Itami, a JSDF reservist, who was attending a nearby doujin convention, takes action by organizing the police to evacuate the civilians into a palace to protect them before the JSDF arrives to stop the invaders. Due to his actions, Itami is promoted to First Lieutenant and celebrated as a national hero. The appearance of the Gate and massacre of Japanese civilians, dubbed the Ginza Incident, prompts the Incumbent Prime Minister to takes action by proclaiming Japan will send a JSDF task force backed by the US to the "Special Region", the world beyond the Gate, to not only explore the new world but also capture and demand reparations from those responsible for the attack. || Itami Youji is a 33-year old otaku who enlisted in the Japan Self-Defence Forces to support his hobby. He is in Ginza to attend a doujin event when what becomes known as the Gate opens, and warriors and monsters enter and attack the people. His presence of mind and valour in the face of the unprecedented events helped save the lives of many civilians, and he is acclaimed as the Hero of Ginza, and even receives a personal citation from the Prime Minister himself, and is promoted to second lieutenant. The mysterious Gate remains open, and while no more creatures have come in from the other side, the Japanese Government remains deeply concerned, and they assemble an expeditionary force to explore the mysterious land beyond the Gate. Youji is of course chosen to be part of this force.

2. The Two Armies

The army sent by the Empire to deal with the Japanese forces stationed at Alnus Hill where the Gate is located is obliterated. Emperor Molt calls for the vassal states to attack them, just to be defeated with huge casualties as well, a move planned in advance by the emperor to avoid the vassal states taking advantage of the Empire's weakened state. As Emperor Molt decides to delay a possible advance from the JSDF with a scorched earth maneuver, the President of the United States decides to leave the investigation of the Special Region to the JSDF for a while, and Itami is assigned to lead the 3rd Recon Unit, created to survey the nearby cities and points of interest. After passing by the village of Coda, the 3rd Unit finds a massive Fire Dragon burning the nearby forest and then attacking and destroying a nearby settlement. || The JSDF expeditionary force remains camped just outside the Gate on the other side, and decimates the allied forces that attack it, their medieval-level technology no match for modern weaponry and military tactics. This is, however, actually a gambit by Emperor Molt to weaken the kingdoms that are only nominally under his authority and keep them from rebelling. With their armies largely destroyed they are unable to resist his subsequent scorched-earth tactics. The emperor`s daughter, Pinya, is ordered to lead her order of knights to investigate the JSDF and learn all she can about them. Meanwhile, back on Earth, the President of the United States considers sending an American force beyond the Gate as well, lured by the prospect of immense resources in the lands beyond, despite the political implications. Domestic opposition in Japan to the JSDF`s operation beyond the Gate is mounting as well, so the President is convinced to bide his time. Youji is made commander of a reconnaissance unit whose job is to make contact with the locals and establish friendly relations with them. Along the way, they find a dragon burning a village. When they reach it after the dragon leaves, they find a woman at the bottom of a well, apparently the only survivor.

3. Fire Dragon

Taking the unconscious elf with them, the 3rd Unit return to the village of Coda, and upon learning about the Fire Dragon, the villagers decide to evacuate as well, assisted by the Japanese soldiers where they are later join by two mages Lelei and her master. Taking heed of the situation, a group of bandits decide to attack the villagers, just to be vanquished by Rory Mercury, an apostle of the Dark God Emroy. While escorting the refugees, Itami's party rendezvous with Rory, and taking a special interest on Itami, she decides to accompany them as well. However, the Fire Dragon appears to attack the convoy and the 3rd Unit manages to drive it away, after blowing off one of its front legs with Rory's help. || Youji goes down the well to pull up the woman, a blonde-haired elf maiden. The Third Reconnaissance Platoon then returns to the nearby village of Coda with the still-unconscious elfmaid and tell the mayor about the dragon, which terrifies them, and they make preparations to evacuate. Youji asks the mayor what happened to the lord who ostensibly ruled over their lands and why he wasn`t doing anything to help with the dragon, and was told that their lord never returned from the last battle near the Gate. While the Platoon helps guide the villagers away from the dragon a group of bandits thinks to attack them and in so doing become their new lord. A demigoddess named Rory Mercury slaughters them without mercy. The next morning she meets with the village and the Platoon, and seems to take a liking to Youji. Soon enough, the dragon attacks them, and kills a sizeable number of villagers. Even modern weapons are at first ineffective against the dragon, until the elfmaid and Rory help the platoon to injure it badly enough that it is driven off. After the villagers bury their dead, most of them are able to settle in other villages where they have kin. The young apprentice of an old magician, named Leilei, the elfmaid, Rory, and a few others remain with the Platoon.

4. To Unknown Lands

The 3rd Recon Unit returns to Alnus Hill, now converted into an advanced JSDF base and Itami obtains authorization to provide shelter to the refugees, including Tuka Luna Marceau, the elf girl he saved. Meanwhile, Princess Piña Co Lada from the Empire learns more about the JSDF's exploits and decides to investigate herself. Back at Alnus, Tuka and the other refugees get used to their new lives among the Japanese soldiers, but for some reason, Tuka keeps requesting supplies not only for herself, but for another, unknown male not listed among the guests, and knowing that they can't depend on the JSDF's charity forever, she is worried about how they can provide for themselves, until Lelei points out that they can collect scales from the corpse of dragons killed by JSDF, which can fetch a good price in the local markets. || Youji has brought his platoon and the small group of refugees back to the JSDF base camp at Arnus Hill near the Gate. His decision to do this stirs up controversy in the upper ranks. The girl Leilei proves able to learn Japanese rather quickly and becomes interpreter. They are fascinated by modern technology but are concerned that they must find a way to repay all the help they are being given. They see a battlefield full of dead dragons killed by the JSDF during the last battle, and attempt to harvest the dragon scales and trade them at the nearby city of Italica. At the same time, Pinya travels throughout the lands and hears stories of the doings of the JSDF from some of the survivors of Coda Village. She finds one of the imperial vassal kings, badly maimed after the battle at Arnus Hill, who tells her of the slaughter and how he realises how they had been used by the Emperor. She resolves to visit Arnus Hill and see these invaders for herself. They also have to pass through Italica to get there. Meanwhile, back on Earth, the President of the People`s Republic of China makes plans to colonise the land beyond the Gate as well. Garbled reports of the incidents involving Youji`s unit serve to make a public relations nightmare for the Japanese government, and the exploration of the land beyond the Gate continues to lose popular support. The Diet of Japan summons Youji and his refugees, but by then they have already departed.

5. The Battle of Italica

Itami's party arrives at Italica, just as the city's forces, led by Princess Piña has just repelled a siege from an invading bandit force. Knowing that her knights combined with the local soldiers have not enough strength to keep holding off the bandits until help arrives, Piña finds herself in a predicament until meeting the 3rd Recon Unit. Upon being informed of the situation, Itami decides to help defend the city and agrees with her plan of positioning himself and his soldiers in the least guarded side of the walls, in order to act as a decoy. However, the enemy does not fall for their trap and launch an attack on the main force instead. As the city's defenses are broken, Itami wonders about what will be the princess' next step as she sees herself on the verge of despair. || Many of the soldiers who survived the battles at Arnus Hill against the JSDF have turned to banditry, and Pina finds herself in command of the defenders as Italica is besieged by these bandits. The city, after the sudden death of its lord recently is nominally ruled by the late lord`s daughter Myui, who being only eleven obviously cannot lead the defence, and so Pina and her Rose Knights offered to do so. During a lull in the fighting, Itami`s platoon, with Leilei, Rory, and Tuka arrive, and convince Pina that they are friendly and are willing to help defend the city. This is Pina`s first true battle: her Knights were relegated solely to a ceremonial role before, and she is not doing well. She had Itami`s platoon guard the south gates, as they are the most difficult to defend, but that night the bandits unexpectedly attack the east gate and overwhelm their defences. She thinks of calling Itami to help but fears he will not come after having put him in what looked like a suicidal position. It seems though that Itami will help of his own initiative.

6. Ride of the Valkyries

The JSDF sends a helicopter unit to assist the 3rd Unit to defend Italica, defeating the invaders with extreme prejudice, much to Piña's astonishment, as the military weaponry and tech displayed by the Japanese soldiers lies beyond anything she had seen before. After Lelei sells the scales and Itami establishes some rather favorable conditions for Piña and the Italicans in exchange for their sovereignty, the 3rd Unit departs back to Alnus Hill, only to encounter Piña's Order of the Rose Knights on their way. Upon knowing their identities, the knights capture Itami, unaware of the peace treaty he and Piña established. In order to avoid escalated conflict, Itami orders his unit to return without him instead of fighting. || The fighting continues at Italica. The eastern gate`s defences are breached, and there is fighting in the city. Rory goes into a battle frenzy, with Itami`s troops behind her. Itami has also called in a squadron of helicopter gunships, and they terminate the bandits with extreme prejudice. This awesome display of modern military firepower leaves Pina in a state of shock, and she realises that a war with them would result in their inevitable defeat. She is equally shocked that Itami does not demand crippling terms which the victors in such a battle usually do, merely requesting trade concessions in exchange for the continued sovereignty of Italica. Leilei sells the dragon scales, and the 3rd Platoon tries to return to the JSDF basecamp at Arnus Hill, only to encounter Pina`s Rose Knights, who do not yet know that the battle is already over and that Pina has negotiated an armistice. They threaten Itami, who allows himself to be captured, ordering his troops to leave him behind, to avoid more fighting.

7. The Princess`s Decision

Piña scolds her knights Bozes and Panache for not only attacking Itami but treating him inhumanely, which both violated the treaty she signed with him which she fears the JSDF will use as an excuse to attack them. As the Formal family staff treat Itami wounds, Rory, Lelei, Tuka and some of the 3rd Unit sneak back to Italica to rescue Itami but not before learning, much to Shino Kuribayashi shock, Itami is a Special Forces Ranger. The 3rd Unit are welcomed by the Formal maids and join Itami for a small party where some of the soldiers get to know the non-human maids. Meanwhile, Piña orders Bozes to sleep with Itami as an apology but gets angry and slaps him after seeing him having a party. Wishing to apologize to Itami's superiors personally for Bozes actions, she and Bozes join the 3rd Unit's trip back to Alnus Hill where they witness the JSDF having a Field training exercise along with tanks and helicopters, and is shock to learn from Lelei that their their soldiers do not use magic but weapons called guns. While Piña and Bozes meets with Itami's commanding officer Lieutenant General Hazama with Lelei as an interpreter, Itami invites Tuka to come with him to Japan to meet the Japanese Diet as a representative of the Special Region. The next day, Itami, Shino and Akira Tomita accompany Rory, Lelei, Tuka to Japan using the Gate along with Piña and Bozes to show them around. || The Rose Knights treat Itami very roughly as they bring him back to Italica, so much so that he is knocked unconscious. Pinya is livid, as they have then violated the treaty so soon after it had been agreed upon and she fears that the JSDF will use the incident as a pretext to attack, so she orders Bozes Co Palesti to make it up to Itami with her body. In the meantime, Itami`s platoon sneaks into the city in an attempt to rescue him, to find that he is being well cared for by several semi-human maids and they have a small party. Bozes arrives and slaps Itami after she sees that he seems to be having fun. Pinya and Bozes join Itami`s group as they return to the camp at Arnus Hill, and along the way they see further evidence of the JSDF`s overwhelming military might as they conduct a training exercise. Pinya speaks to General Hazuma, the commanding general of the JSDF forces at Arnus Hill, apologising for the incident. The next day, she joins Leilei, Tuka, and Rory as part of the delegation from beyond the Gate for the audience with the Diet of Japan.

8. Japan, Beyond the Gate

Itami and his group arrives in Tokyo where Lelei, Piña and the others are amazed with the city and its people. After meeting a Public Security agent, who reveals Itami's past on how a slacker like him became a member of the Special Forces Group, Itami, Rory, Lelei and Tuka heads to Japanese Diet while Piña and Bozes meets members of the Foreign Ministry to discuss the 6,000 Special Region prisoners under Japan's custody. At the Japanese Diet, Itami, Rory, Lelei and Tuka are questioned by the chairwoman for the Investigation Committee over the Fire Dragon attack, who accuses the JSDF of failing to protect the refugees killed by the Fire Dragon. Rory, Lelei and Tuka defend the JSDF and reveals how the Japanese soldiers have help and save many lives from the dragon. || The five girls from the Special Region pass through the Gate with Itami`s unit, and are astounded by modern Tokyo. A Public Safety intelligence officer named Komakado meets them and escorts the group to the Diet. Pinya and Bozes are not part of the official delegation and attend a private meeting with cabinet officials in preparation for a possible future peace conference with the Empire. At the same time, Leilei, Tuka, and Rory are brought before the Diet into what becomes a sensational public hearing. Some members of the Diet opposed to the JSDF`s operations beyond the Gate try to paint Itami`s attempt to save the villagers from the dragon into a bad light, but the three girls are having none of it, and stress that the lieutenant did the best he could under such difficult circumstances, and in so doing humiliate their spokeswoman. Komakado is concerned about possible attempts on the Special Region girls, and so gets them to leave the Diet using the subway rather than the cars they were expected to use, which are promptly attacked. Whoever is attempting to capture them also seems to have control over the subways as certain lines they are about to use inexplicably fail. They are attacked by a man in the street who tries to take Rory`s axe, which is incredibly heavy, which incapacitates both the attacker and Komakado who both unwisely attempt to lift it. To hide them, Itami brings the girls to the house of a famished young woman whom he introduces as his ex-wife.

9. The Hakone Mountain Night Battle

Itami explains everything to his ex-wife Risa, who agrees to help him by bringing Rory, Lelei and Tuka for a shopping trip the next day while Akira accompanies Piña and Bozes to the library after both of them have taken interest in Boys-Love manga from Risa. Meanwhile, Itami meets with his old friend, Defense Minister Kanou Tarou, who orders him to bring their Special Region guests to a Hot Spring Inn guarded by the Japanese SFG. As Itami's group stays at the Inn for some fun and getting know Risa and Bozes' crush on Akira, three different Black Ops team enter the area via the forest and battle with the SFG. When the SFG manages to identity and informs Minister Tarou that two of the Black Ops operatives are foreigners, the Japanese Prime Minister is blackmailed by the US President who wants the SFG to stop attacking his Black Ops team so they can take the Special Region guests with them. The Prime Minister orders Tarou to tell his men to stand down but not before revealing he will be resigning. As the three Black Ops team heads to the Inn, Itami deals with a drunken and aroused Rory. || Itami`s group spends the night at his ex-wife`s home, and decide what to do next. He has the girls go out for a bit while he meets with the Minister of Defence, who is an old friend, and he is ordered to bring their guests to the Hakone Mountain resort that had been prepared for them and is guarded by elite Japanese special forces. Itami brings them there as ordered, and after they are settled there is fighting just outside as several groups of enemy commandos make their way to the resort. The Japanese special forces unit manages to neutralise most of these mysterious enemy forces. However, President Dirrell blackmails the Prime Minister with reports of government corruption and convinces him to get the unit guarding the resort to withdraw, so that the American commando unit can abduct the girls from the Special Region with no interference. Rory Mercury is heavily affected by the fighting outside the resort and tries to seduce Itami.

10. Despair and Hope

Rory's attempts to seduce Itami is interrupted by a phone call by Tarou. The US Black Ops team arrives at the Inn, only to encounter the Chinese and Russia Black Ops team, leading to a fight between the three sides which Rory later joins which ends with everyone killed except Rory. After packing their things and taking a van from the Russians, Itami's group heads back to Ginza but worried that the foreign agents will attack again, Risa posts a message on the internet that the Special Region girls will be attending the Ginza memorial. As a result, a large crowd gathers at Ginza to meet the girls, foiling the foreign agents kidnapping plans. Due to the large crowd, Public Security arresting several foreign agents and Shino revealing to her news reporter sister Nanami about the attempts on them, the US, Chinese and Russian leaders call it quits and orders their men to stand down. || The American paramilitary officers approach the Hakone resort unchallenged, only to find that there are also Russian and Chinese paramilitaries there, apparently on the same mission. A bloodbath ensues when Rory joins the fray, and eventually all of the invaders are killed. Itami`s party escapes by commandeering the van used by the American paramilitaries, and they drive back to Tokyo. Itami`s ex-wife Risa spreads the word that the girls will be heading back through the Gate that afternoon, so a large crowd gathers at Ginza to see them off. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has resigned, removing the blackmail leverage that the Americans had, but the Central Intelligence Agency is still attempting to abduct the girls, planning to take them just as they arrive at Ginza, since the assurances of the previous administration should still hold. However, Komakado has arrested all the foreign intelligence agents in the area, including the CIA ones, saying that he has no way of verifying whether any such agent he finds is with the CIA or not, foiling their plans. Itami`s party thus returns to the Special Region unmolested.

11. Visitor

Five months since the Gate's opening, the Alnus refugee camp develops into a town while Piña introduces Kouji Sugawara from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Lord Cicero, one of the most important nobles from the Empire, and obtains his cooperation with the peace talks in exchange for the release of his nephew, who is currently in Japan's custody as a prisoner. Back in Alnus, Tuka keeps wandering the city looking for his father and refusing to accept the fact that he is already dead. As Itami and his friends discuss about it in a tavern, Mari claims that they must make her face the truth, but Itami objects, certain that they can not be responsible for her as they don't know when they will be called back to Japan, much to Mari's dismay. Left alone with Rory, Itami keeps drinking with her until a Dark Elf woman appears and mistaking Rory as a child, reprimands Itami for having a drink with her. With her plans to spend the night with Itami ruined, Rory mischievously plays along with the Dark Elf's misunderstanding, forcing Itami to flee, with the elf unaware Itami was one of the "Men in Green", the JSDF soldiers, she was looking for. The Dark Elf introduces herself as Yao Haa Dusi and offers a huge Adamantium stone as a reward for helping her village that is being attacked by the Fire Dragon, which is why she has come to Alnus to seek the JSDF's aid. Having no success, Yao looks for a place to rest outside the town when she watches two F4 fighter jets maneuvering in some exercises and a helicopter taking off with Itami with some goods from the base heading towards the Imperial capital, renewing her hopes that the Japanese forces will help save her people from the dragon. || Itami`s squad and the girls have returned from Japan. The JSDF basecamp at Arnus Hill has become the centre of a thriving town as trade across the gate between the Special Region and Japan flourishes. Pinya and a Japanese diplomat have begun meeting with imperial nobles, attempting to convince the most hawkish of them to consider peace with Japan by giving them gifts and negotiating the release of important prisoners of war captured during the first assault by the Empire against Japan. Meanwhile, Itami is at a tavern with Rory, who is still trying to seduce him. A dark elf woman named Yao Ha Dyusshi appears, looking for what she calls the "green men" (the JSDF) trying to get their help. She denounces Itami for apparently corrupting a minor, and her interference irritates Rory. She makes the misunderstanding deep enough that the Yao draws her sword on Itami, who flees. It turns out that Yao is looking for help to finally finish off the fire dragon that Itami`s group encountered earlier, and offers a huge diamond as reward.

12. What Would Itami Do?

Yao Ha Ducy pleads with the SDF to help defeat the Fire Dragon, but to no avail. Everyone begins to wonder what Itami would do in this situation || Yao goes around the settlement of Arnus and the JSDF basecamp, but is unfortunately unable to make herself understood to the JSDF soldiers she meets. She falls prey to thugs and robbers but is able to defend herself but one of them reports her and she is eventually arrested by MPs. Leilei, being the best bilingual speaker manages to get her story and the thug is instead taken into custody, and she eventually secures for Yao an audience with General Hazama. Yao explains her errand, but the General refuses to help. The settlements of Yao`s people can only be reached by crossing imperial territory, and if he sends enough forces there to defeat the dragon that would be interpreted by the Empire as an act of war. Frustrated in her mission, she overhears stories about Itami and how he might manage to do something to help, and so when she goes to the refugee dormitories she asks Tuka about him. Itami meanwhile has escorted a second diplomat to join Pinya, and is being sent as part of a delegation to the capital.
