1. The Story of Daigo
In Japan's Warring States period, Lord Daigo Kagemitsu makes a pact with 12 demons, offering them his unborn son in exchange for the prosperity of his lands. Years later, young thief Dororo is attacked by a ghoul but rescued by a mysterious boy, whose body parts turn out to be almost entirely prosthetic. || As Lord Daigo Kagemitsu waits for his wife to give birth, he recalls the time he made a pact with the 12 demons in the Hall of Hell, prepared to tread the path of evil in exchange for power. When his son is born, the demons extract their payment, the child is born without limbs, facial features or skin. The baby is set adrift in the river and left to its fate. Sixteen years later, he is now a young man, travelling alone wearing prosthesis made by Dr. Jukai. While hunting a sludge-like demon, he encounters Dororo, a young petty-thief being beaten by three men Dororo cheated out of their goods. The demon attacks and devours the men, but the youth destroys it with blades inside his prosthetic arms. Following the death of the demon Deiki, the youth`s skin appears, and a demon statue in the Hall of Hell is split by lightning. Meanwhile back in Ishikawa, Daigo`s second son Tahoumaru returns home from hunting, although his mother still misses her first son.

2. The Story of Bandai
Dororo and Hyakkimaru happen upon a village and are brought before its chief, Lady Bandai. However, Hyakkimaru inexplicably draws his sword in her presence, resulting in both him and Dororo being locked in a storehouse by the villagers. It turns out they are not the only ones confined there... || Dororo accompanies the young man who seems unable to see, hear or talk, but has excellent sword skills, super-human strength and can detect friendly or unfriendly beings by the colour of their souls. Dororo takes the young man to a village run by the beautiful woman named Bandai offering to slay a local monster for a reward. While there, they meet the blind monk Biwa-Houshi who can also detect people’s souls. They discover that Bandai is a demon who has been eating travellers, and Young Man slays her. A strange being reveals to them that the Villagers were helping Bandai, while taking the money of the travelers for themselves; It was this being that the villagers wanted slayed as it constantly rang a small bell, that the very first traveler held, and the noise of which is haunting the villagers. Afterwards, Houshi joins Dororo and the young man regains his nervous system from slaying the demon and reveals his name, as Hyakkimaru to Dororo. Meanwhile Daigo Kagemitsu learns that the Sakai Clan appear to be preparing for war.

3. The Story of Jukai
Jukai is a doctor who travels the land fitting prosthetic arms and legs to those who have lost their limbs in war. One day, on the riverbank he finds a baby missing most of its body parts. He decides to raise the child, who he names “Hyakkimaru”. Jukai provides the child with prostheses, but the time comes when Hyakkimaru sets out on a journey to recover his own body parts. || The story is told of Jukai-sensei, a doctor who not only healed the sick, but also made prostheses for those who had lost limbs in accidents or war. He once worked for Lord Shiba, crucifying wounded enemies until the day his loved one was killed by Shiba`s soldiers and he leapt into the sea. He was rescued by foreigners and learned how to make prosthetics. One day he found Lord Daigo Kagemitsu`s abandoned and limbless infant on a riverbank. He took the child home and later made prostheses for him so that he could move about and appear human. Six years later Jukai gave him the name Hyakkimaru. After Hyakkimaru killed the demon Kamaitachi and his right leg was returned to him, Jukai realized that although the boy attracted demons, his body parts were probably stolen by demons. Later, Jukai inserted swords into Hyakkimaru’s prosthetic arms before the young man left Jukai to travel alone. Back in the present, Hyakkimaru returns to Dororo and Houshi after killing a demon, but now appears to have the ability to feel pain.

4. The Story of the Cursed Sword
Dororo and Hyakkimaru come face to face with Tanosuke the Slaughterer, who wields a cursed sword in which a demon dwells. Hyakkimaru narrowly manages to repel Tanosuke, but the demon blade falls into Dororo’s hands and begins to take control of him. || Dororo chats with the girl Osushi while Hyakkimaru stands outside experiencing the rain. Suddenly, Hyakkimaru detects a demon sword and rushes off. He encounters a man wielding the sword, and only manages to defeat him by trapping the sword in his prosthetic leg. Dororo goes to retrieve the leg, but when Dororo touches the sword it pulls Dororo back to its owner, the brother of Osushi. Osushi brings her brother Tanosuke home, but he is only interested in the sword. Tanosuke recalls how he was given the demon sword Nihiru (似蛭), and how it changed his life in its eternal search for blood. Meanwhile, Hyakkimaru disarms Dororo, but Tanosuke seizes the sword again, and attacks Hyakkimaru. This time Hyakkimaru kills Tanosuke and Hyakkimaru`s ears are returned to him.

5. The Story of the Moriko Song, Part 1
Struggling to adapt to an unfamiliar world of "sound", Hyakkimaru is injured in a fight with a ghoul. He is taken in and nursed by a girl named Mio, who looks after children orphaned by war. However, after becoming aware of a demon nearby, Hyakkimaru heads out to fight it before he is fully recovered. || Hyakkimaru has regained his sense of hearing, but the increased sensory input leaves him confused to the point where even low-level ghouls can injure him. A woman`s song reaches out to him and draws Hyakkimaru. She tends his wounds at a nearby ruin where she runs an orphanage, of sorts, for children left destitute by war. What price must she pay for their continuing care?

6. The Story of the Moriko Song, Part 2
Hyakkimaru has regained his voice from the devil god, but one leg was stolen from him. After returning to the deserted temple and having his wounds taken care of, he again goes into battle with the demon. Meanwhile, in the abandoned temple where Mio and the children are waiting ... || Mio continues her nightly assignations, but now she`s servicing both camps in order to make enough to realize her dream of owning her very own rice paddy. She just wants to get a little bit back from the war that`s taken everything, but playing both sides against the middle is a high-stakes maneuver. Hyakkimaru also works harder, but his condition makes it exceedingly dangerous to hunt the antlion demon. What can he gain, and what is lost?

7. The Story of the Jorogumo Silk Spider
The spider-like ghoul Jorogumo is wounded by Hyakkimaru. To heal itself, it transforms into a woman and takes advantage of the hospitality of a young man named Yajiro. Having let Jorogumo slip through their fingers, Dororo and Hyakkimaru stop at a village where they hear rumors of a kidnapper at large. || Hyakkimaru and Dororo come across the female spider-like demon Jorogumo which has captured a man. Hyakkimaru attacks the demon and wounds it, but it escapes. The travelers enter a nearby village which has a problem with men disappearing at night. The next day, the kindly Yajiro finds the ailing demon on the trail which appears as a beautiful woman. He takes her home, and after feeding her some ohagi, gives her the name Ohagi and leaves for work at the lord`s quarry. Although she is hungry, Ohagi resists eating Yajiro because of his kind nature. Yajiro offers to guide the ailing Ohagi out of the village, and it is revealed that local men have not been captured or killed, but that Yajiro has been helping them flee from the oppressive lord. Yajiro and Ohagi encounter Hyakkimaru who attacks Ohagi, but she escapes with Yajiro. Yajiro takes Ohagi to a secret passage in the mountain, but are attacked by the lord`s troops and Yajiro is wounded. Enraged, Ohagi attacks and defeats the troops, but this attracts Hyakkimaru to her. As they prepare to fight to the death, the color of Ohagi`s soul changes as she worries about Yajiro, so Hyakkimaru withdraws. The couple leave and Hyakkimaru and Dororo continue on their way.

8. The Story of Saru
At a certain village, young girls are offered up as ritual sacrifices to appease a giant centipede demon that appears shrouded in black clouds. Hyakkimaru and Dororo team up with Saru, a boy whose older sister has been offered as a sacrifice, and together they confront the demon. || A dark cloud containing the demon Nokosaregumo appears over a village and the villagers hurriedly prepare woman as a sacrificial bride to appease it. As Hyakkimaru and Dororo see the bridal parade travelling up the mountain, Saru, a wild boy, tries to stop the sacrifice. After Saru tells them the story of Nokosaregumo and the kind woman he considers his sister, Dororo and Hyakkimaru agree to exterminate the demon. A dark cloud envelops them, and Nokosaregumo appears as a large centipede. However, Hyakkimaru is unable to differentiate the demon from the cloud as they both show red to his vision and it swallows the woman. Dororo and Saru devise a plan to create an explosion using the sulphurous gases emitted by the mountain which sets the demon ablaze but has little effect. Dororo then jumps on Nokosaregumo`s head and calls to Hyakkimaru, enabling him locate and attack the centipede by sound, destroying it. The dark cloud dissipates and Hyakkimaru, Dororo and the woman (who was swallowed whole and not yet digested) fall into a spring. Saru is relieved to find his sister alive and agrees to move into the village with her. Hyakkimaru regains his sense of smell and addresses Dororo by his name for the first time.

10. The Story of Tahomaru
A village within Daigo's domain is being terrorized by a ghoul that dwells in a nearby lake. Tahomaru, accompanied by his aides Hyogo and Mutsu, volunteers to exterminate the ghoul. || Bakemonogani, a crab-like monster devours a man after destroying his boat. Meanwhile the drought in the Daigo worsens, and lord Kagemitsu is advised of the Asakura clan gathering on their border. He visits the temple and finds more demon statues destroyed, and the demons inform him Hyakkimaru is still alive and slowly retrieving his body. His son Tahoumaru also discovers his father is searching for a baby. Later, Tahoumaru and his two bodyguards, Mutsu and Hyogo, encounter a village where they speak of a monster in the lake which eats the fishermen. He leads a group of villagers in their boats onto the lake and attacks and damages the monster, but it is too fierce and they are forced to retreat. Tahoumaru then has the villagers construct a trap, intending to lure the monster into a shallow channel where the water can be drained out. The plan works, and Tahoumaru, Mutsu and Hyogo attack it together. However, the monster fights back and almost devours Hyogo, but at the last minute Hyakkimaru arrives and slays it. Tahoumaru is left wondering who the stranger is.

11. The Story of Banmon, Part 1
After entering Lord Daigo's domain, Dororo and Hyakkimaru hear tales of Banmon, the huge wall that is the last remnant of a fort that once stood on the border. Hyakkimaru squares off against the fox demon that haunts the wall. || Tahoumaru learns Hyakkimaru`s name before the two travellers go to Daigo Kagemitsu`s capital. There, they see a play depicting Daigo as a great slayer of demons, protected by the Goddess of Mercy. The Biwa-Houshi is also present and decides goes visit the Hall of Hell to seek the truth for himself. Hyakkimaru and Dororo decide to visit the remnants of Fort Banmon built by Daigo on the site of a village he destroyed which is supposedly cursed by a demon. They find a partial timber wall where Asakura pin bodies of their enemies with arrows. They encounter a young boy, Sukeroku, who wishes to cross the boundary to the Asakura side and rejoin his family. Meanwhile, Tahoumaru`s bodyguards report the incident with Hyakkimaru to Daigo, who realizes that his son is alive, and determines to kill him and maintain the prosperity of his domain, ignoring his wife`s pleas. Tahoumaru overhears their exchange and later comes across a demented woman who was present at Hyakkimaru`s birth. She tells him how the demons "ate everything" but left the boy alive. Night falls at Banmon and a kyūbi no kitsune (nine-tailed fox demon) (九尾の狐) appears. While it attacks Hyakkimaru, Sukeroku uses the distraction to pass the wall with Dororo in pursuit, however he is captured by Asakura sentries. The demon is eventually chased away by the arrows of a squadron led by Daigo himself, who then approaches Hyakkimaru.
