The Amanto, aliens from outer space, have invaded Earth and taken over feudal Japan. As a result, a prohibition on swords has been established, and the samurai of Japan are treated with disregard as a consequence. However one man, Gintoki Sakata, still possesses the heart of the samurai, although from his love of sweets and work as a yorozuya, one might not expect it. Accompanying him in his jack-of-all-trades line of work are Shinpachi Shimura, a boy with glasses and a strong heart, Kagura with her umbrella and seemingly bottomless stomach, as well as Sadaharu, their oversized pet dog. Of course, these odd jobs are not always simple, as they frequently have run-ins with the police, ragtag rebels, and assassins, oftentimes leading to humorous but unfortunate consequences. He proceeds to a video rental store. When he tries to rent a video, the store employee asks him to show his driver`s license as identification, but as a fugitive, he doesn`t have a license. Meanwhile, Gintoki has gone to a driving school to take lessons after having his license suspended. One day, Kagura and the others notice that Catherine`s eyebrows are on the verge of connecting. Catherine becomes violent for some reason and attacks Otose. When things settle down, Otose`s eyebrows are also connected! Gintoki and the others run away from the strange incident. During the Amanto attack twenty years ago, Jiraia is said to have killed his own people within the Oniwabanshu, all for the sake of his devotion to the previous shogun. In the end Jiraia himself was the one to be terminated, but he managed to escape. Now his devotion is directed toward his own creation, Tsukuyo.
