Ayakashi are strange, supernatural creatures invisible to the majority of people. Though most are harmless, some ayakashi attack humans to devour their life force. Exorcist ninjas are tasked with protecting people from these spiteful spirits. Matsuri Kazamaki is a young exorcist ninja born to a prestigious clan. His childhood friend, Suzu Kanade, is an ayakashi medium—an individual with immense vitality that attracts ayakashi. Matsuri deems all ayakashi threatening and wishes to keep Suzu as far from them as possible, but this clashes with her desire to remain close to them. One day, the pair encounters Shirogane, the "King of Ayakashi," who is hellbent on consuming Suzu. As she is about to be eaten, Matsuri comes to the rescue and manages to seal the ayakashi's powers—but not before Shirogane takes revenge by turning him into a girl! Until he finds a way to transform back, Matsuri must adjust to his new, peculiar lifestyle while fighting against hostile ayakashi. Moreover, Suzu is now conflicted about her feelings toward Matsuri—further plunging their relationship into a state of ambiguity.
Episodes
1. Matsuri, Suzu, and Ayakashi
Matsuri, an exorcist ninja, encounters Shirogane, an ayakashi targeting his childhood friend, Suzu, who seems to have something "special" about her.
2. Girl Friend
Having had Gender Swap Awakened cast on him, Matsuri enters high school as a girl. There, Shirogane attacks in a bid to take the God-Sealing Scroll, but the ayakashi Tadare goes after Suzu instead. Matsuri saves her and decides to become on of Suzu's girl friends.
3. The Speedster Exorcist Ninja
Suzu makes Suzu-dumplings, trying to become friends with Shirogane. Matsuri sees her and reminisces about the times he admired her for her ability to befriend ayakashi. That's when they get a visit from the Lightning-Fast Exorcist Ninja, Ninokuru Souga.
4. The Melancholy of the Ayakashi Medium
Matsuri does his best to fit in as one of Suzu's girl friends, but he doesn't know how to act around Yayoi and Lucy. Yayoi, in turn, wants to get to know Matsuri better too, but she keeps tripping and getting up close and personal, which complciates matters. She believes Matsuri despises her now, but the cause was actually an ayakashi!
5. Omokage
The Suzu that showed up in Matsuri's room was actually an omokage shadow, a cloning ayakashi. What's more, it's still wandering around somewhere, which poses a real threat to Suzu's life. Matsuri and Shirogane frantically scour the town for it.
6. Those Who See, and Those Who Can't
Lucy shows Matsuri and Suzu a photo she took, which seems to be a spirit photo! Captured in it is an "Ikon" a cluster of human resentment, which then proceeds to possess Lucy herself. Matsuri must find a way to exorcise the ayakashi and protect her!
7. Utagawa Garaku
The battle with the Jinyo intensifies, and Shirogane has to fend him off with Suzu in tow!
8. Her First
Having lost his powers, Shirogane now has a problem he has to deal with, and a proposition for Suzu and Matsuri.
9. An Encounter with 'Him'?
