Makunouchi Ippo has been bullied his entire life. Constantly running errands and being beaten up by his classmates, Ippo has always dreamed of changing himself, but never has the passion to act upon it. One day, in the midst of yet another bullying, Ippo is saved by Takamura Mamoru, who happens to be a boxer. Ippo faints from his injuries and is brought to the Kamogawa boxing gym to recover. As he regains consciousness, he is awed and amazed at his new surroundings in the gym, though lacks confidence to attempt anything. Takamura places a photo of Ippo's classmate on a punching bag and forces him to punch it. It is only then that Ippo feels something stir inside him and eventually asks Takamura to train him in boxing. Thinking that Ippo does not have what it takes, Takamura gives him a task deemed impossible and gives him a one week time limit. With a sudden desire to get stronger, for himself and his hard working mother, Ippo trains relentlessly to accomplish the task within the time limit. Ippo is a high school student who works full time at his mother's fishing though. Because of this, he gets bullied on by the kids at his school. That's when his life turns around, when a professional boxer happens to be jogging along the way, and introduces Ippo to the world of boxing.

Ippo succeeds in catching 10 falling leaves, and is granted his first sparring session.
3. Tears of Joy
Ippo loses his first sparring session, but shows enough potential to be accepted into the gym.

Ippo practices shadow boxing.

Okita uses moves that makes him unpredictable for Ippo. Okita also uses a fighting style like Dante and he uses a corkscrew.

Miyata's in Thailand and he get's a tough opponent with a great record, Jimmy Sisfa.

Miyata's fight with Jimmy Sisfa begins, Miyata starts off bad and when that happens Miyata tries a counter punch.
41. Barf-michi's Big Fight
Aoki, Kimura, and Ippo all try going A-class. Yamada has his first fight. All the guys want to go to training camp.
42. Sharing a Dream
Ippo's mother collapses from overworking so Ippo has to look after the family business. Ippo thinks about quitting boxing so that his mother doesn't overwork herself again.

Ippo gets ready for his match against Saeki the Speed Star.

After Ippo loses he finds out that Sendo and Volg will fight for the title. Kamogawa tells Ippo that he shouldn't go to the gym for three months because of all the damage from his fights. Ippo goes out with Kumi, Mashiba's sister.

Aoki, Kimura, and Takemura all fight their fights. Before fighting Takemura makes a grand entrance wearing a bear pelt and fight his match only using his left hand. Nekota starts teaching at the gym for a bit.
69. The Trap of the Southpaw
Sendo begins his title defense match with Shigeta the southpaw user. Sendo fights Shigeta but gets more angry with him as the fight goes on.
70. The Young Punk
Ippo invites Kumi to the zoo. Kumi lets Ippo know that she was the one who wrote idiot outside the gym. Sendo's grandma tells Iimura Mari about Sendo's childhood and how he was brought up.
71. Time for the Showdown
Ippo reads Mari's article. Ippo invites Nekota to his fight. Both Sendo and Ippo have their weigh in. Sendo and Ippo begin their rematch with Ippo getting a very early knockdown on Sendo.
72. Lollapalooza
Sendo and Ippo's fight begins guns blazing with the two giving each other blow for blow. Ippo finds out that Sendo has the advantage of having a bigger frame.
73. Surpass That Moment
Ippo starts the third round by charging at Sendo but then hesitates which leads to Sendo beating Ippo all through the third round. The fourth round is a different story being more in the favor of Ippo.
74. Mixup
A flashback shows how Sendo joined his gym. Ippo gets knocked down two times but when he gets up the fifth round gets more brutal. The fifth round ends and after that, the sixth round begins and is just as brutal as the last round.
75. One Step Further
The match between Ippo and Sendo finally reaches its conclusion after seven ruthless rounds.
